CommentThe Little Egret is a dancer! When the water is just right, it will hunt by enthusiastically pursuing its prey across the water like a ballet dancer. Initially standing still, watching mesmerisingly like other egrets, once the potential prey is spotted, often a hunt will start with stalking. If then the prey spots the movement and darts away a ballet of stupendous scope may follow. Beginning the chase with a couple of pliés, the egret is soon up to speed and in a flurry of grand battements, pirouettes and pas assemblés the prey is hunted down. Add to all this that the bird has wings and a spear at the extremity of the face, and it is soon clear that the prey has minimum chance of escaping. Should this happen anyhow, there’s a short interlude until the waters are again calm and visibility restored. Then the scenario is repeated until success comes about. In Australia, the Little Egret is widespread, avoiding only the harshest Outback. Bibra Lake; GPS. Status: Least Concern

FasTone for viewing; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for post-processing; Topaz Pro plug-ins Sharpen AI, DeNoise & Studio for sharpening and noise control, finally adding a basic adjustment in Topaz Studio. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for supplementary data and colour checks.
