CommentAnother photo from the trip home after the BLP conference in the west. This was taken at a small water soak on the road in to Gawler Ranges National Park. It was stinking hot - got to 43 C that day (early spring; hate to see it in mid-summer) and the birds were flocking to this spot as it might have been the only water around for some distance. The bird (like some other species) landed some distance from the soak and walked to it for its drink. We never would have noticed the soak if it hadn't been for four Wedge-tailed Eagles drinking from it as we drove past. This shot was taken on a second visit to the soak late in the day when it had started to cool a little thankfully.
EquipmentCanon 80D with EF 100-400mm Mark 2, handheld at 349mm 1/800 sec, f8, ISO 1600. Initially processed in Canon DPP 4 to crop, adjust exposure and lighting and perform noise reduction (at about 50% of default values). A 16 bit TIFF file was created from the RAW DPP image and finished in PSE (Adobe Photoshop Elements v9) where further noise reduction was applied to the main subject(s) using Neat Image plugin for PSE. Stronger noise reduction was applied to the remainder. Main subject selected and adjustments made to lighten shadows, darken highlights and increase midtone contrast as appropriate. Inverse of main subject selected and adjustments made as appropriate to contrast, highlights, shadows and saturation to make the bird stand out more effectively. Main subject sharpened after resizing for upload.
