CommentOne of the great spectacles of the bird world happens at Lord Howe Island in April each year when up to 30,000 Providence Petrels return to the island to breed. This extraordinary concentration of birds can be observed each evening from the land at Little Island and from the water from BLP member Jack Shick's charter boat. I have chosen this image from many because it nicely shows the key ID points for this species. On first sight the silvery-white underwing flashes and dark-grey upperwings are enough to ID the bird. When it is closer, the scaly pale face, chunky black bill and black feet confirm the ID. This individual is in fresh plumage at the start of the breeding season.
