CommentThis is one of a series of portraits of birds place in square picture spaces. This involves decisions about how much to crop the not only the larger image but also the bird. Some people prefer to crop down to just the head, others like to see a bit of the body included. Other decisions involve how to place the bird inside the square. One thing that is consistently important in these portrait series is good bokeh.
The key element I am seeking with this portrait series is a full eye and a sense that the bird is engaging with the viewer. The smaller the bird, the harder it is to achieve satisfactory outcomes. In this case the slight turn of the head towards the viewer and a trace of colour in the eye achieve the outcome sought.
With my gear the main trade-off to manage is to get close enough for good detail but not so close that I lose depth in the far parts of the bird. In this case f/9 did the trick.
