Comment | Parts of the bushland around Hobart are once more alive with the distinctive calls of these summer breeding migrants from the mainland. This male with crest raised was loudly defending his territory from other pairs in the neighbourhood. They are tricky to get a high-quality image from (this one is a substantial crop), as they don't often descend to low level. A photographic challenge for the rest of the season!
Equipment | Canon EOS 5D IV EF 100-400 L IS II + 1.4x III TC, at 560mm, centre spot servo AF, handheld Manual exposure, 1/1000 sec, f/9, ISO 640, spot metering Processing: Lightroom Classic CC for RAW conversion and initial adjustments, then Photoshop CC, where moderate noise reduction using Neat Image was applied to the bird+perch only. The background was processed separately, including a measure of Gaussian Blur to subdue distracting elements, and a narrow-band luminosity mask to de-emphasise the brightest highlights. Final sharpening was applied to bird+perch only, after size reduction to web submission dimensions.
