CommentThe White-faced Heron is an abundant and versatile species of heron. It can be found in just about any wetlands, and can be encountered also on beaches and reefs. It will forage in all types of low water, in ditches and dams, pastures, saltmarsh, mangroves and tidal mudflats. Though an alert and somewhat shy bird, if you have a fish pond in the garden, it is not afraid of sneaking in early one morning and feast on your priced goldfish or marron. Interestingly, when stalking prey in low water, this heron will occasionally stand still on one leg, stirring up the bottom at length in order to flush out prey. The heron here is in full breeding plumage sporting nuptial feathers, and it has just raised these in order to greet its mate which flew in and landed nearby. The sexes are alike, with immature birds being much duller than the parents and having less white on the face. Bibra Lake; GPS. Status: Least Concern
