CommentA male Purple Swamphen is vigorously pursuing another male in a fierce, territorial dispute at a suburban lake. The whole incident did not last 10 seconds. NB: ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ has the Western Australian Purple Swamphen down as a subspecies: ‘Porphyrio melanotus bellus’ under the moniker ‘Australasian Swamphen’, whereas other authorities lump it with the Eastern one as ‘Porphyrio porphyrio’ by 04.01.19.
