CommentAn immature bird, the first shot of the morning as the sun was rising at 06.05. Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters were one of the most abundant species at Kirkalocka Station at the time of our visit. Of these, most were first immature birds easily identified by their grey-blue iris and yellow barbs with white shafts on the cheek. Juveniles have a brown iris and prominent yellow ear coverts. Adult birds have a grey-blue iris and distinctive white spines on the cheek (no yellow). We have few images of immature birds in the BLP library, some of which are erroneously identified as 'adult'.
