CommentThis small flock of Royal Spoonbills completed a number of large ascending circuits above my vantage point in the Tamar Island wetlands, eventually sorting themselves out into this almost perfect V formation with nearly synchronised wingbeats, upon which they set off north up the Tamar River (next stop Werribee?). They are still not an overly common sight in Tasmania, and usually attract some interest when they're about.
EquipmentCanon EOS 5D IV
EF 100-400 L IS II + 1.4x III TC, at 560mm, centre spot servo AF, handheld
Manual exposure, 1/1600 sec, f/9, ISO 800
Processing: Lightroom Classic CC for RAW conversion and initial adjustments, then Photoshop CC where noise reduction with Neat Image was applied to the sky, and at a reduced percentage to the birds. Original exposure settings to preserve detail in the bright highlights had darkened the sky, so the latter was selectively lightened a tad. Size reduction to web submission dimensions was followed by final sharpening using Smart Sharpen.
LocationTamar Island wetlands, Launceston, northern Tasmania, Tasmania
Keywordsin flight, adult
