CommentDistinguished from Pacific Gull by the red spot on the lower mandible at the gonys, broad white trailing edge and narrow white leading edge on the wings, and the all white tail. The fresh plumage, bright red spot at the gonys, bright yellow bill and bright red orbital ring indicate this individual is ready for breeding in the Spring. Post-breeding, the gonydeal spot fades, sometimes completely, the bill becomes duller pale yellow, grey-green or grey-blue, and the orbital ring becomes orange-red.
