CommentThis is ssp vagans which is widespread in New Zealand, Kermadec Islands, Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. It is larger and darker than the nominate race sanctus of Australia which migrates to New Guinea, Solomon Islands and parts of Indonesia. Kingfishers were first recorded on Lord Howe Island in 1869 and it is believed the birds colonized the Island from New Zealand in the mid-nineteenth century. Sexes similar with females duller. This fellow is in fresh plumage characterized by the buff flanks and scalloping on the breast.
EquipmentCanon 1DxII + 400 mm f/4 DO II + 1.4x III extender, hand-held.
Manual, spot metering, AI Servo spot AF, f/5.6, 1/200 sec, ISO 2000.
Processed using DPP4 and PSE14 with Neat Image plug-in.
