CommentA large flightless rail species endemic to Lord Howe Island. There was a rapid decline in the population after European settlement from the impact of feral animals and pets. By 1980 the population was reduced to about 30 birds on the summit of Mt Gower (875 m). After the removal of some feral animals and cats, and a captive breeding programme, the population has recovered to about 280 birds. The red iris indicates this is an adult bird (juveniles have a grey iris).
