CommentA large shearwater species that breeds on LHI from Dec - Apr in the forest on the east side of the Island from Ned's Beach to Clear Place. The nest is at the end of a burrow about 2 m long. During our visit we encountered fledglings on the roads and foot-paths at night having been abandoned by their parents some weeks prior. At this stage the youngsters have a few remaining downy feathers on their heads, they are losing weight as they are not being fed, and strengthening their wings for first flight and a good feed at sea.
EquipmentCanon 1DxII + 400 mm f/4 DO II + 1.4x III extender, hand-held.
Manual, spot metering, AI Servo spot AF, f/5.6, 1/3200 sec, ISO 800.
Processed using DPP4 and PSE14 with Neat Image plug-in.
