Ian Wilson	2019-05-15 09:21:40	Hello Steven, I like the action you have captured in this image and nice to get two birds in the frame. I think the composition is quite good as it makes the photographic narrative clear. The fact that the head of the flying bird is reasonably sharp is testament to your bird-tracking skill as the exposure time of only 1/640 sec makes avian flight photography highly problematic. An exposure time of 1/2000 sec or less is usually required to ensure success capturing sharp images of birds in flight. In this case I guess you were set up for perched birds and when one of them flew, you chanced your arm. The shadows on the birds are unfortunate and it looks like the whites were over-exposed in those parts in direct sunlight. This is probably a result of shooting in aperture priority with the spot metering taking an average sample over parts of the bird in light and shade. Glenn Pure	2019-05-15 09:34:13	Thanks for your post Steven and welcome to BLP. These birds are real characters and often up to something 'interesting': it makes me wonder what was going through their minds when this shot was taken and what are they up to next. As such, I find the image engaging and see it more as telling a story and photojournalist rather than aiming to be simply a beautiful bird photo. I'm therefore not overly concerned about some of the technical and composition aspects that I might normally comment on for other photos such as the fairly 'busy' foliage on the right of the frame. Nevertheless. I'd be tempted to tighten the composition a little by chopping a little off the left of the frame. At present, I don't feel that extra bit of sky adds a lot but rather dilutes the birds in the overall frame. Normally I'd comment on the strong patchy light in a shot like this but I actually think it works in this shot. I'd still try lifting the brightness of the shaded areas a little and darkening the highlights similarly while still retaining the overall feel of the patchy light. It's good that the heads of both birds are not turned away from the camera as this engages the viewer more. I see you have used a relatively low shutter speed for this (1/640 sec). To freeze motion, a higher shutter speed is recommended (at least 1/2000 sec). Again though, in this case, I don't mind a bit of blur on the wings of the flying bird. It adds to the story. The heads of both birds are still fairly sharp and this is the more important part to keep good detail. Even so, the overall image looks a little soft all round and I feel a little more could be brought out by modest sharpening. This is especially important after the image is downsized for our website as downsizing will soften an image. Applying modest sharpening after downsizing will fix this. Hope that helps.
