CommentBreeds around the N.I. of New Zealand with good numbers migrating to south-eastern Australian waters. This small shearwater is notoriously difficult to photograph as it avoids boats. It invariably flees, flying low and fast on whirring wings. I have chosen this image because it shows the key ID points very well. Most notable is the view of the under-wing and 'arm-pit' which distinguishes this species from the very similar Hutton's Shearwater. Hutton's has an obvious large black triangular patch of axilliary plumage in the arm-pit and more contrast on the under-wing coverts and feather shafts. The pink legs and feet also show well in this image.
EquipmentCanon 1DXII + 400 mm f/4 DO II + 2x III extender, hand-held.
Manual, spot metering, AI Servo spot AF, f/8, 1/2000 sec, ISO 3200.
Processed using DPP4 and PSE14 with Neat Image plug-in.
