CommentAround 15% of the images of this species in the BLP galleries are of flying birds. Compared to other species in the galleries, this is a high percentage. Using the 'flight' term in the search program, the average flight images per species is around 5%.
This is the first image of the 'V' formation used by bird flocks to reduce energy use in flight. The leading bird uses up most energy and there is usually a bit of shuffling as the lead position is rotated. This may be the reason for the crowded look in the bottom left hand corner of the image.
It seems to me that the Little Black Cormorant uses a relative flat and somewhat rounded 'V' - more like a 'U'.
From a technique point of view, I had located myself at the up-sun bank of a watercourse at dawn and had the camera settings ready for birds in flight. Aquatic birds tend to follow water courses when flying from location to location.
I would have liked this flock to be a lot closer.
