CommentPeafowl were introduced to the Cataract Gorge in the late 1890s and are now a self-sustaining feral population. I was in the Gorge for the Tasmanian endemics and at the end of the day encountered an adult male peacock trying to impress a nonchalant female. He tried so hard with his circling, shimmering display that after 30 mins I could see he was panting for breath and near exhausted. It was an irresistible photo-opportunity and a most memorable encounter.
