CommentThis was taken over a small temporary road puddle. The puddle was an important habitat element for Welcome Swallows. They gathered mud, hawked for insects, plunge-bathed and skimmed the water for a drink. The bird above has its beak agape preparatory to hitting the water for a sip. My calculations (may!) indicate that contact with the water can be measured in thousands of a second. Unfortunately the length of the puddle was at right angles to the sun and any breeze tended to come from nearly the opposition direction. The puddle evaporated completely before I could capture the perfect skimming shot.
