Conservation status (BWL) = Least Concern

This species was misidentified as Wilson’s Storm-Petrel x6, New Zealand Storm-Petrel x1

The Black-bellied Storm-Petrel (BBSP) is distinguishable from the Wilson’s Storm-Petrel (WSPE) by the upperwing. The greater secondary coverts on the WSPE are grey and the BBSP does not have grey. BBSPs also have a white belly with a broad black stripe in the middle and WSPEs have a black belly with white flanks. WSPEs also have yellow foot webbing.

The BBSP is distinguishable from the New Zealand Storm-Petrel (NZSP) by upperwing colour. The NZSP is brown and the BBSP is grey.

Some other identifying features for the Black-bellied Storm-Petrel are:

- White rump
- Dark crescent shapes on underwing
- Square tail
- White underwing, bordered black
