CommentThe Snares is one of NZ's subantarctic islands situated about 200km south of Invercargill. Although the Snares Penguin may be increasing in numbers, because this is its only breeding site, it is considered vunerable to sudden changes to its environment both natural and human induced.
As with all the 6 spp of crested penguins they have an amazing breeding strategy. They lay 2 eggs with the 1st egg smaller than the second which can follow up to 6 days later. However the second egg is always the 1st to hatch. Usually only one chick survives. It seems that some crested penguins may actively discard the 1st egg which seems a very wasteful strategy.
