CommentThis bird - a Collared Pratincole - is believed to be the first one of the subspecies ever sighted in Australia! I submit this photo to BirdLife merely as a matter of record. When taking the photo, I had help locating the bird by a number of people with spotting scopes, as the bird was sitting tight far out, blending in with the surrounds so that I could not spot it with the naked eye. Once set up, I tightened down all equipment and used the timer to avoid vibration. I took about 10 photos, all alike. The Collared Pratincole is difficult to distinguish from the Oriental Pratincole. This bird was photographed eight days after it was first spotted at Herdsman Lake, in the belief that it belonged to the latter species, which is occasionally seen around Perth. Later on, however discussions concerning the identity of the sighting and the emerging of a number of photos deemed it a Collared Pratincole. A bird was also seen at Point Walter earlier on 22.01.19, and if it is the same bird, this is the first of its species ever to be recorded in Australia. A wader with a breeding range from southernmost Europe via northern Africa and into southwest Asia, it winters in tropical Africa and along the eastern coast of that continent, south until Durban. Pratincoles are peculiar amongst waders for also hunting their prey on the wing, like swallows. The bird was sitting tight at a mudflat close to the edge of water. Nikon View NX-i for viewing and selecting files; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2019 for post-processing; Topaz Pro plug-ins for noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for supplementary data and colour checks.
