CommentHow to take an interesting bird image? Dusky Moorhen are common birds. A quick scan of the BLP set of 59 images is interesting. There is a remarkably high proportion of action shots and different age classes. In addition there is quite a variation in photographic approaches. This species does not lend itself to bird on a stick approach. So, how to bring something fresh to the equation? I had previously noticed that the floating green algae provided an unusual bird/water contrast. If the birds aren't colourful, I try to pick up a bit of colour in the context. Most images of Dusky Moorhen include adults or young chicks. This image picks up immature plumage. Open beaks can add some structural interest - in this case a good tongue shot! Finally, this behaviour is unusual. In order to maximize efficiency of the algae harvest, the bird was twisting its head to the side. Because the light was strong I had to wait until the bird organized itself to maximize my shadow management.
