CommentThere is a corner of Royal Park called Brens Drive Grassy Woodland where a remnant of the original indigenous vegetation has been preserved, including River Red Gums, Yellow Box, native grasses, and Wattles and Casuarinas. Visiting there for the first time, I came upon this Eastern Rosella busily engaged with extracting seeds from the Casuarina cones. The Rosella is most likely a male, given the deep red of his head and neck, and the blue in his tail (compared to the less pronounced reds, and lack of blue in the tail, of females). The Rosella’s intense reds, greens, yellows and blues make a startling contrast to the browns of the Casuarina cones and branchlets lying under the tree. One very happy bird enjoying a midwinter cone feast.
