CommentI was looking for the holy grail of Werribee birders, an OBP, after a news report from Birdlife trackers that our last 200 in-the-wild OBPs on the planet had left their breeding grounds in Port Davey, Tasmania, a few weeks ago, and begun battling their way through the Bass Strait headwinds to come to our welcoming arms at the Werribee Treatment Plant (as well as a few other points along the Victorian and South Australian coastlines). I became very excited when I saw some small greenish looking parrots ahead of me crossing the track as I was driving along the Western Lagoon. But, LOL, they were not OBPs, but - OMG - BWPs, or to be more precise, five BWPs. Why OMG? Because Blue-Winged Parrots seem to have a been a little overshadowed by their more famous OBP cousins, and deserve to be honoured with their own acronym. Maybe BWPs - described as “uncommon” by Pizzey & Knight - are not quite so endangered as OBPs, yet they are equally as beautiful with their snub noses, green and yellow hues, and bright blue patch on their wings. As ground foragers for grass seeds, they do not always choose the best locations for photogenic shots. This photo was taken from some distance, and shows one of their preferred habitats, not to mention the utility of BWPs’ green camouflage outfits in open ground situations, especially with Swamp Harriers on patrol in this vicinity. Unfortunately, in my excitement to come closer for an FSP (forensically sharp potrait), I alarmed them, and they flew off before I could get a BIF. I watched as they alighted on a tree to survey me from a safe distance. The BWPs had the last LOL.
