CommentHaving disturbed a group of five Brolga ambling ahead of me as I was driving along a Western Lagoon track, I had stopped at a distance and spent some time moving slowly towards them to take some close-up photos. After some apparent consultations about what to do about me, one pair took off to the right, and the other less flappable three, strolled down the embankment to the left and then, in no particular hurry, took off to rejoin the other pair. This gave me plenty of time to position myself well for taking this photo of one of the Brolgas taking to the air quite low over the wetland and gaining height, a much more strenuous task for larger birds such as Brolgas. You can see almost see it straining to achieve altitude. From its distinctive red neck band, grey “earmuff”, and yellow iris, it is evidently an adult, possibly but by no means certainly a female, given a relatively small dewlap. The photo highlights the Brolga’s stunningly beautiful light and dark scalloped grey wings, and its upturned wingtip “fingers”.
