CommentWellard Wetlands are a handful of artificial small freshwater lakes in Western Australia which originated in the 1980s, when a large industrial organisation was undertaking clay extraction here. When the clay extraction operations were discontinued, a number of small lakes were created and landscaped and the surrounding areas were lovingly re-vegetated. In time the entire area metamorphosed into an important sanctuary for waterbirds and bushbirds alike as well as for a rich variety of other fauna. Though it is less that 200 hectares in size, located along a freeway and only 44km from the Perth CBD, over the years more than a hundred bird species have been spotted here, and lately also the Quenda, which is threatened in WA. This image was taken at 07:27 on a cold and foggy autumn’s morning and depicts several waterbird species; Whistling Kites were roosting in the trees but cannot be seen here due to the fog.
EquipmentNikon D850 in Manual Exposure at 1/320 sec, f10; ISO-640. Handheld & lying flat on stomach. Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f2.8 G ED lens was used.
