CommentMy second encounter with a group of Brolgas frequenting grasslands and wetlands in the Western Lagoon precinct. It was sighted on a coastal embankment overlooking The Spit and the waters beyond. It is apparently very uncommon in southern Australia where only 1,000 birds are estimated to be found, but large populations of 20,000 to 100,00 remain in the north (https://www.bushheritage.org.au/species/brolgas). John Gould was impressed by it being “most stately and elegant in all its actions” (“Birds of Australia, V.6). The biggest threats to Brolgas appear to be: wetland habitat loss due to drainage for development and agriculture; collisions with powerlines; fox predation; and feral pig reduction of cover of plants Brolgas use for hiding from predators. I was pleased to be able to sight and photograph one of the remaining 1,000 or less Brolgas still to be found across the whole expanse of southern Australia but saddened and angered by the casual ways in which we are inexorably destroying the last wetland habitats for one of our “most stately and elegant” birds.
