CommentI had only just discovered this famously elusive bird, a Spotted Crake, at a saline pool near the Little River Hide, after seeing a slight movement near the muddy banks, but it suddenly became aware of me and sprinted off into the surrounding reeds. The image captures its distinctive forward crouching posture as it scrambles for cover. They are apparently mainly ground birds, very reluctant to take to the air, and probably very much at the mercy of predators if caught out in the open. With all the Kites, Hawks and Harriers scouting the rich pickings and pluckings to be had in the Werribee wetlands, it makes much sense to dart for cover as soon as you spot a shadow or movement.
