CommentThis juvenile Black-shouldered Kite had circled and come to land on a stand of pine trees along Paradise Road in Werribee Treatment Plant. I had been following it as initially it hovered in the sky, circled around, and then glided in to perch on this tree top. This portrait highlights the distinctive differences between Black-shouldered juvenile and adult plumage, particularly the orange-brown amulet around its neck and breast, and the white fringes of the grey wing feathers. I liked the way it was perched with its back to me yet had no trouble swivelling its head around to its back. For small birds and rodents beneath its gaze, there would be little escape from a Black-shoulder Kite’s 360-degree scanning, not to mention its hovering ability to survey prey from above within a huge circle. As for those claws, better not to think about them.
