CommentGreat Bowerbirds are very numerous in the suburbs of Townsville and so many are quite used to people. The image shows several of the characteristics that make them so interesting. A male with his nucral crest fully displayed, stands amid a collection of selected and mostly man-made objects arranged around his substantial bower. He was trying to lure a female closer to the bower with loud calls and by brandishing a cumquat in his beak. The idea that a male's breeding success depends in part on the selection of man-made objects is fascinating.
