Comment2018-19 was a great breeding season for waterbirds at Lake Gwelup, Western Australia: The water level was high and the shorelines had turned into densely vegetated swamps. Australasian grebes were nesting and raising broods in close proximity to each other, causing much aggravation between the highly territorial and protective breeding pairs. Though 4-5 eggs are laid and hatched, after a few days perhaps only 2 or 3 of the chicks might still be alive. The mortality rate amongst chicks is high; I was told that Nankeen Night Herons were amongst the main culprits. Time of capture: 06:10.
