I encountered this adult Buff-banded Rail as I was walking the bush track, camera rig shouldered, near Neil Hawkins Park at Lake Joondalup, Western Australia. It happened completely by chance. Curiously, I spotted the bird on high ground away from the water and in woodlands, a quite unusual setting for this water-loving species. I also found myself near eye-level with the bird, as I was positioned lower down on the track, and in combination these facts allowed for an unusual series of captured images over some five minutes, until the bird flew off towards the lake shore. Incidentally, on 24th Jan I caught brief glimpses of a pair of these rails, skulking about in a swamp with two tiny chicks elsewhere in the Perth Greater Metro Area. Perhaps the depicted bird had a hidden nest nearby in the woodlands, which would account for its whereabouts. Time of capture 08:15.
EquipmentNikon D850/Nikkor AF-S 500mm f4G ED VR lens was used, with my Gitzo/Dietmar Nill support. This image did not have any seriously troubling twigs and greenery around the bird, but at my pre-set f9, the background separation was not great, so I tidied up the background a little in Photoshop and cropped to 123%.
