CommentDabbling duck species have elaborate courtship displays, usually with vocalization caused by contortion of the tracheal tubes, which determines the posture of the neck. In this image the male bird is showing the 'head-up tail-up' display which is accompanied by a short whistle and features a momentary flash of the speculum, elevated fanned tail and head turned toward the female. This display only lasts a few tenths of a second and is repeated, often interspersed with other displays such as head rolls and shakes, chin-lifts, down-up, synchronized swimming and bridling. The yellow spots in the background of this image are wattle blossom floating on the water.
