Australian Pelican

Australian Pelican (Image ID 43149)
CommentThis image was taken early morning. The birds had been sleeping overnight on a floating aerator pontoon. I was observing them asleep when one awoke and yawned - not something I expected. I was hand holding my camera and took a series of shots of which this photo is one. The birds' behaviour is the focus and the reflection is quite nice considering the water was stirred up by passing ducks. I am pleased with the detail under the circumstances.
I submitted this photo because the juxtaposition of the sleeping Pelican with the yawning action of the one just awakened is most unusual, together with the excellent detail of the birds and the contrast of white and pink against the dark background with minimum noise makes for an interesting and arresting composition.
