CommentAt first I felt disinclined to take this Long-Billed Corella’s portrait. It feels a little unfair to take a photo of a bird that is not wearing its Sunday best and is less than well-groomed. But the long bill of the Corella is not there for nothing. Its foraging niche in the ecological smorgasbord is to dig down into the mud and soil for bulbs and corms. And this is exactly what I found it doing after a rainy night in Melbourne, there in a grassy patch of Coburg Lake Reserve, energetically excavating roots, oblivious to how it looks to me or anyone else. Gleam in its eye. Being itself. Not afraid to get its beak and claws dirty. In your face. Red, white and blue. “Take me or leave me”. So I took her (or him - you can’t tell with Corellas).
