Sitting on a rock at the end of Woodman Point from dawn, I watched the world come alive and the resident birds with it. 3 Grey Plovers were present that morning, and they spent the early morning alternately feeding and resting. As the tide came in, the birds moved closer to me, and suddenly I was lucky, when one of the plovers wanted to rest on a rock already occupied by another plover. A brief melee broke out, but after a few seconds it was all over, and the last arriving bird retreated. Still the birds were quite far out, and I had to resort to engaging maximum focal length possible with my camera rig.

Nikkor AF-S 500mm f4G ED VR lens + TC-14E MkIII Teleconverter
Technique: 1.5X cropped DX sensor used as well as the TC-14E MkIII= 1050mm 'focal length equivalent in 35mm terms'.
Camera rig support: Gitzo GT3543XLS Tripod, Dietmar Nill gimbal tripod head; sitting on a rock in very low water
Exposure Mode: MANUAL 1/3200 sec at f6.3; ISO-500. Metering Mode: Center-Weighted; Focus Mode: AF-C high/5 frames per sec & AF Area Mode: Dynamic, 9 points. VR: Off
Nikon ViewNX-i for viewing and selecting files; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for resizing image, cropping to 125%, selective sharpening and general post-processing inclusive of the removal of halos; Topaz Pro plug-ins DeNoise & Studio 2 for blanket sharpening and noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for supplementary data and colour checks
