CommentLake Ninan at Wongan Hills, Western Australia is a salt lake presently (Oct 2020) holding very little water of high salinity. Salinity in the lake has been known to reach 600% of that of the ocean, and little life is supported now with much of the shore vegetation long dead, but in 1917 and again in 1963 the lake overflowed, reaching 4½ m at the deepest point. In the past water from the lake was carted by camels to the township for use in steam engine trains, and also salt was collected. The lake is part of a wetland area important for wildlife, but continued salinity has become a devastating and lasting problem for Lake Ninan.
