CommentWith breeding season underway the distinctive 'pick-it-up' call of this species is presently dominating parts of various bushland areas around Hobart. Often the photographic challenge with small species is getting enough 'pixels on the bird', prompting me to experiment on this one with hand-holding 800mm focal length, which I eventually had to tame with a solid monopod. This is the 'Tasmanian' ssp striatus, distinguished by the yellow wing spot, common here in breeding season but mostly migrating to the SE mainland in autumn and winter.
EquipmentCanon EOS 5D IV
EF 400 f/4 DO IS II + 2x TC III, at 800mm, centre spot servo AF, monopod
Manual exposure, 1/2500 sec, f/10, ISO 1000
Processing: Lightroom Classic for RAW conversion and initial adjustments, then Photoshop where moderate noise reduction was applied with Neat Image plugin, and final sharpening with Smart Sharpen applied only to the bird and perch after size reduction to web submission dimensions.
LocationWaverley Flora Park, Bellerive, southern Tasmania., Tasmania
