CommentCrows and ravens seem to have had a bad press ever since Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem. They can look a little fierce as this photo of an immature Little Raven taking off from a high spar perch might suggest. Yet some cultures and writers have had more positive views of them. As Boria Sax writes in his fascinating book “Crows” (2003), “Foraging on their long, powerful legs, crows can appear to glide over the earth. Then they ascend almost effortlessly, flapping their wings only now and then, into the air like spirits. Though people generally do not think of them in such terms, crows are also remarkably graceful…All these birds (crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws) have extensive ranges and complex relationships with human beings”. I have identified this Little Raven as an immature bird from its brown eye colour which becomes white as an adult.
