CommentI first heard the beautiful pure liquid call of this male Grey Shrike-Thrush as I arrived in the carpark at Royal Park wetlands. Being relatively new to birdwatching I had no idea what it was. As I finally spotted it high in a huge eucalypt tree, a more experienced Birdlife Australia member arrived and identified it for me, saying there was only this one Shrike-Thrush resident in this location, so we were lucky to see it. Although apparently Shrike-Thrushes are not uncommon, this was the first time I had seen one, and wonderful to find myself - after all these weeks of Melbourne lockdown - still seeing and hearing new birds (at least for me) in the heart of the city. It may not be the most colourful of birds but it certainly makes up for that with its vocal gift (roll over Butcher Birds and Magpies!). In the middle of this deadly pandemic, the Shrike-Thrush’s song recalled for me Spanish poet Vicente Aleixandre’s words: “Sing for me, birds who are born every day/and declare the world’s innocence/in your cry. Sing, sing and be glad in your heart/that you uproot me, and don’t return to earth”. I identified this Shrike-Thrush as a male from the absence of a pale eye-ring.
