CommentI photographed this pair of Striated Pardalotes (ssp. substriatus) at their nesting cavity about 5 m up a tree trunk, and at a safe distance for the birds not to take much notice of me. I used camouflage netting over the camera rig, but as rain came and went, I had to put a plastic bag over the rig for protection a couple of times. Initially I stayed for 20 minutes to get some captures, then came back later for another 15 minutes, when I managed this image in better lighting conditions
EquipmentTechnique: 1.5X cropped DX sensor used = 750mm 'focal length equivalent in 35mm terms', but the trade-off is that file size cropping occurs in camera at the said factor, decreasing the file size
Camera rig support: Gitzo GT3543XLS Tripod, Dietmar Nill gimbal tripod head
Exposure Mode: MANUAL 1/1250 sec at f5.6 & ISO-500. Metering Mode: Center-Weighted; Focus Mode: AF-C high/5 frames per sec & AF Area Mode: Dynamic, 9 points. VR: On, but this would not have any effect at the chosen shutter speed; probably just increasing use of battery power!
Nikon ViewNX-i for viewing and selecting files; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for cropping to 260%, selective sharpening & lightening as well as general post-processing; mild application of Topaz Pro plug-in Studio 2 for blanket noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for supplementary data and colour checks
