CommentThe ‘must have’ lyrebird image is of the beautiful tail displayed during the courtship dance of the male. But it was the distinctive song that so captivated David Attenborough. The elaborate and complex song is the winter soundscape of the temperate rainforests of the Dandenong Ranges. This image captures the essence of the song of the lyrebird as he announces his presence in his breeding territory – bill wide open calling loudly between periods foraging amongst the leaf litter on the forest floor. Not a lot of light penetrates here, so I used fill flash to enable me to use a higher shutter speed to ‘freeze’ the vibrations during the call and lower the ISO to keep the noise down.
