CommentA Pelican on a rural dam is a very very nervous bird. I skirted the dam by about 300 meters and then for the last 50 meters I crawled on my tummy. Our herd of cattle had been removed the previous day and I had to be very careful not to crawl in cow pats. On reaching a large oak tree that was growing on the edge of the dam, I rolled over and waited until my back was not screaming. I then crawled another 4 meters and positioned myself so I could just see through the tall grass that was growing on the edge of the dam. It was pacing back and forth and was in a group of spoonbills. I also think it sensed that I was there. I waited, focused on a very small gap in the long grass hoping that it's eye would stay long enough for a shot. This is what I got. I love the fact that there is no distractions and your eyes are directed straight to its head and eye. The elegant hold of its head for a somewhat clumsy, big bird. Also the memory of what I did to get this photo makes it all the more special.
