CommentI thought I would enter this photo as the bird adopted a pleasing pose in good light and stayed motionless long enough for me to set my camera’s ISO and shutter speed very low and capture a few shots with relatively little noise. I was further pleased that both the direction and strength of light from the low early morning sun combined to make the brown iris and black pupil visible giving the eye good detail - as opposed to being just a black disc, which tends to be the case in other Azure Kingfisher photos I have taken.
Perched on a very low branch on the edge of a lagoon, the background water provides nice green, grey and liquorice tones that I think work nicely with the bird’s colours. I also like the way the bird has positioned its prey, allowing a good view of its bill in action as well as the reddish colouring inside its gape.
