CommentThis bird is a Western Whistler. Pachycephala occidentalis.
Visually, there’s little difference between the male Western Whistler and the Golden Whistler male, especially not when viewed from the front. Ticking one off would depend rather on where the photo was taken than on the appearance of a male bird: If the capture is from south-west Western Australia, it’s a Western Whistler! The females and juveniles, however differ slightly from subspecies within the Golden Whistler complex in that the slightly yellow vent area found in that complex is replaced by a slightly rufous one in the Western
Whistler and maybe also a bit more of that colour on the belly. The back of the female is grey in colour, rather than brownish. All in all, visually the Western Whistler is very similar to the eastern Golden Whistler fuliginosa subspecies. Orange Grove, WA. Status: ‘Secure’ on Rottnest Island; else not listed by March 2020
