Satin Bowerbird

Satin Bowerbird (Image ID 41001)
CommentPerched right on the edge of a rainforest area, happily devouring some fruit, this Satin Bowerbird kept me busy – trying to get a clear photo that showcased her eye. The green, brown and blackish tones in the background were blending in nicely with the birds plumage – almost camouflaging her – but that characteristic and mesmerising eye certainly gave her away. Not much light was penetrating the rainforest and I certainly did not want to destroy the beautiful colouring of the eye by using a flash. This necessitated several shots experimenting with ISO and shutter speed. Finally, at a high ISO (1000) and very low shutter speed (1/80th sec) combined with a wide aperture, I was pleased with the exposure, detail and sharpness. I was fortunate that the bird was co-operative and took long stares at me in which she remained motionless, this allowed the low shutter speed. I also was pleased with the quirky lifted and twisted head pose she adopted as she took a break from eating to check me out. This pleased me as the pose helps emphasise the fine feathering onto her stout bill which is a further identifying feature.
