CommentI remember sitting in my portable bird hide when this Kite flew down to a waterhole, scaring off a multitude of finches and other small birds that I was keen on photographing. At first I was a bit disappointed, but soon realised that there were some very good opportunities at hand. I decided to enter this photo as the longer I looked at it, the more pleased I was with a number of aspects that it portrays. I took numerous shots at different f stops - and at f13, I was able to get the tip of the bird’s protruding bill and the rest of the head in good focus. I also like the beautiful symmetry of the head and bill that the ‘front on’ view affords - including the eyes with matching glints, the matching whiskers, the matching horizontal lines on the gape, the matching slender feathers over the forehead arching inwards and meeting perfectly in the centre, plus the morning light was low enough to evenly light up inside both nostrils as well as give the bird a glistening bill right down the centre. If the bird had have been any closer, I would not have been able to take the shot. The dark streaking over its head indicates it is a juvenile. The shutter sounds coming from inside my hide caught the bird’s attention – and I particularly like the intense gaze that the ‘front on’ view commanded.
