CommentOn looking inside the nest cavity of a Fairy Martin nest with the 'bottle neck' entrance missing I was surprised at what I saw, the nest was occupied by Budgerigar young, number unknown but at least two. I thought this broken entrance signified the nest had been predated but it seems the adult birds had removed the entrance tunnel in an effort to expand the entrance diameter. There were a few pair of Fairy Martin still nesting at this time though these were either rearing a second clutch or perhaps late breeders using ready made nests. Nest colony was small and located on the trunk of a gum tree (Coolibah/River Gum hybrid).
Image quality is poor as I simply dialed in 1 positive compensation and took the shot, as a consequence the outer shell of the nest is 'blown' and the focus inside the nest is poor. This was taken only to record the event of Budgerigar nesting in Fairy Martin nest colony and no flash was used.
