Orange Chat

Orange Chat (Image ID 40355)
CommentI have friends who live at Patchewollock in the Mallee and when I went to take care of their dogs for a few days, I decided to take an afternoon trip to Lake Tyrrell to search for Orange Chats. Luckily, there were a few birds present, but after I spent about 2 hours trying to get some shots, I was dejected at my lack of success. Then, in the last 30 minutes of light of the day, this male decided to perch about 6m in front of me with the lovely evening light streaming over my shoulder. He sat there for about 15 minutes, on the same perch, surveying the surrounding heath and singing his heart out in the dying light. I took shots and then moved closer by crawling along the ground towards him. In the end, I was about 3m from the bird and without a care in the world, he continued to sing away as the sun approached the horizon. I chose this image because I love the golden evening light on the orange bird, the Chat is sitting nicely isolated on a small piece of representative vegetation, it is a lovely front-on pose with head turn and the background sky and distant vegetation made for a beautiful evening background. I just loved the time this bird allowed me to spend with him.
