CommentI have entered this photo as it reminds of me how this bold male Crimson Chat focused its attention on me while assessing if my close presence posed any danger to the small flock of adult females and juveniles he seemed to be protecting. I had set my camera up close to the ground near a log in an otherwise flat paddock vegetated only by sparse and harsh grassy patches – making the log the best vantage point for both the bird and myself. This allowed me to photograph him with a clear background, free from unwanted clutter and distractions.
After making his assessment of the danger level, he re-joined the flock. All of these tiny birds were completely at ease with me sitting in my chair next to my camera as they happily foraged for food. Assuming that my monitor is correctly calibrated, I am also pleased with the accuracy of the crimson colouring in this photo (as opposed to turning out red or a faded orange).
